Warm up 9/10/12:
The sharks and seal each get 10% of the energy because the rest of the energy was used for the 7 life processes. The Seal gets 10% of the clams' energy and the shark get 10% of the seals' energy. A producer is the plankton and the consumer is the clams. The clams take 10% of the plankton' energy. A predator and prey interaction is the seals and the sharks, with seals being the prey and the sharks being the predators. The The clams are the primary consumer because they are the first consumer in the food chain.
Warm up 9/13/12
A niche means the organisms' role or job in the ecosystem. The niches of a squirrel is to spread seeds by storing nuts and to get preyed on by the predators in the ecosystem. If organisms have the same niche then that means that they have the same roles in the environment. If both of the organisms have the same niche, they have to compete for their job or role. The organism that survive is the one best suited to live.
Warm up 9/14/12
The rabbits and the grasshopper would compete to for resources because they both eat carrots and oats. They have to fight for their food because the food will become limited. It will become limited because many organisms are fighting over it. Also, they share the same niche. which is a job or role.
Warmup 9/17/12
Plants compete for sunlight, water, and the nutrients in the soil. Plants would compete for sunlight when there is a dense forest and there is not a lot of sunlight, the plants have to fight for it. Plants will compete for resources when they are limited.
Warm up 9/18/12
When the arctic tundra heats up, the polar bears will lose their lands to hunt and live on.The polar bears will have to either adapt to survive or become extinct. They will have to learn to how to survive in the warmer temperature by shedding their fur. Their shed fur will take some weight off of them and it will make swimming easier. The polar bears will probably not have enough time to adapt in order to survive.
Warm up 9/19/12
The environment has become warmer over time because it had been warmer than usually the last few decades and a few rabbits have started to have thinner fur. If the change is short-term, the rabbits with long fur with die out and the rabbits with the thin fur will be the rabbits that will survive .If this was a long term change, the long fur rabbits will have time to evolve. Natural selection will happen with the future generations.
Warm up 9/20/12
This would be a short term environmental change because the organisms will rebuild the environment. A organism would have to move to in order to survive. They would migrate to somewhere else then they could move back once the ash and the dust get out of the air. When the environment goes back to normal, it would be secondary succession.
Warm up 9/25/12
The difference between inter-specific competition and intraspecific is that the inter-specific competition is where the competition is between the same animals in the species and intraspecific competition is where the competition is between 2 or more different species.
Warm up 9/26/12
If the population of the organisms increase past an ecosystem's carrying capacity, the population will start to fight for living space and other resources that become limited. The organisms will start to die off. Darwin's finches adapted to their environmental change by their beak shape changing. Their beaked changed over time due to natural selection because the different beaks helped the birds catch their prey better depending on the island that they are on.
